A history of the sport.

Ten pin bowling has a history that stretches back to the 1840s, having derived from 9 pin bowling which was banned because of its association with gambling and crime (there are rumours to get round this that they added a tenth pin, but these are most likely unfounded).

The 1940s to the 1960s are considered the ‘golden age’ of ten pin bowling, when membership of the American Bowling Congress grew from 700,000 to 4.5 million.

Ten pin bowling was only introduced into the UK in the Swinging Sixties but the industry nearly collapsed due to under-investment. It was only the 1990s when the number of bowling alleys in the UK exceeded 200 (hard to believe, considering how popular the sport is now).
